How does your service support whānau?
Ngā Ara Tōnui – Successful Pathways supports whānau in our Whangārei community by providing a holistic career development and employment kaupapa for taitamariki “Mauri Mahi, Mauri Ora”. Our kaupapa utilises hauora Māori principles and proven career development tools.
Our kaupapa has two phases, Social connection – provides taitamariki with life skills and confidence-building support such as cooking, budgeting, nutrition, first aid etc. The second phase is where taitamariki are given the tools to understand their skills and relate these to planning, applying, and securing employment/training opportunities. The overall kaupapa is underpinned by long-term pastoral care.
Our aspirational goal is to, “Support our local taitamariki to successfully navigate their way through the world of work and training and make informed and positive decisions that will improve outcomes for themselves and their wider whānau."
What do you think gets in the way of people contacting you for support (what are their fears and concerns)?
Many whānau have thought our service has a cost. Our service is free.
What surprises people when they do start working with you?
Many taitamariki are surprised by our holistic and engaging approach to teaching and learning. We facilitate in small groups with whakawhanaungatanga being central to our approach.
What results have you seen in your work with whānau?
Whānau make positive comments to our kaupapa about the increase in students' mana, engagement, and positive change of attitude towards their futures. We also have taitamariki who are working and are now hiring students from our kaupapa.
Is there a referral process or can people self-refer to your service?
