We are here to help and support you and your whānau through cancer diagnosis, treatment, and recovery.
Cancer Society Northland offers a range of free support services ranging from practical support provided by our Cancer Nurse Specialists, Social Work & Psychology teams helping you to navigate your journey, understand your treatments and can offer assistance with accommodation and transport for your medical appointments. We have a wide range of cancer resources available and local support groups to connect with.

Supporting rangatahi aged 13-24 impacted by cancer across Aotearoa, whether it’s their own cancer diagnosis or cancer in their whānau.
CanTeen provides rangatahi with individual support and therapy, the chance for peer connection through events and programmes, online support, and rangatahi development.
Child Cancer Foundation
Provide personalised support to children (0-13) with a cancer diagnosis, and their whānau, from diagnosis throughout treatment and beyond. We also provide some support for parents with a child aged 13-20.

North Haven Hospice
Specialist palliative care for people with any terminal illness or life-limiting condition, and support for their families/whānau and carers all free of charge.
We support patients to live as well as possible and, when the time comes, to allow death to occur naturally with comfort and dignity. Our support for family/whānau and carers continues during their bereavement.
Hospice care is holistic. It extends beyond physical needs, placing equal importance on emotional, social, cultural and spiritual needs.
Patients receive our services primarily, or even entirely, in their homes or place of residence; throughout the entire Whangārei District or south-east Kaipara.

Look Good Feel Better
We provide free programmes for any person, with any type of cancer, at any stage, to help people feel in control and able to face their cancer with confidence.
We are non-medical and provide:
- Advice on how to look after yourself during treatment
- Practical tips, tools and techniques to help patients feel more confident with everyday life
- Advice for those experiencing hair loss, including wigs, headwear and scarf tying
- Expert advice on how to fill in thinning brows to recreate a natural look
Our classes are an opportunity for people to connect and spend time with people who understand what they are going through.
We offer support for men, women and teens, both online and in the community. Participants receive a confidence kit of skincare and makeup products handpicked specially for them.

The Cancer Support team is based at the Jim Carney Cancer Treatment Centre, Whangarei Hospital on Hospital Road.
We can see patients at the centre or on the ward at the hospital. If required the social workers can see people in the community, and the clinical psychologist can offer clinics in other regional hospitals.
Our Psychology and Social Work Team can help with:
- The shock and disbelief of diagnosis
- Learning to manage emotions such as anger, frustration, grief, sadness, anxiety or depression
- Assisting with practical issues such as transport or accommodation
- Accessing supports and other agencies within the community
- Talking with health professionals - e.g. what questions to ask
- Helping you to make the decisions that are right for you
- Coping with treatment, medical procedures and tests.
