How does your service support whānau?
Whangarei Youth Space provides free Youth Health and Youth Development services, programmes and activities for 12-24 yr olds in our city. This is a safe and fun place where you can meet friends, get involved in what’s on, find a mentor, access health services and get education, training and employment support. Monday to Friday from 3.00pm until 6pm we open our doors for you just to meet your friends, make new friends, chill, cook, eat, and enjoy the music and fun activities. Come and join us! We run extended hours during the school holidays and have unique events throughout the year.
What surprises people when they do start working with you?
The decision to have governance board consisting of a 50% young people (18-24) and 50% adults (24+) stemmed from this request, and has been in effect ever since. Youth-Adult Partnerships is a purposeful partnership between young people and adults, this is not only a framework model for supporting reciprocal learning between Adults and Youth, but for promoting engagement, participation and leadership. This way of working is innovative and, as far as we know, unique in New Zealand.
