How does your service support whānau?
We offer Social Services support to many local whanau - we are based in Moerewa and our focus is by Moerewa for Moerewa
Food Parcels - Financial Support through Community Connections - Whanau Wellbeing through Whanau Ora - Youth Programs - Family Violence Programs
Cooking Classes - Tunatown shops for supporting new local businesses - Community development support - Aquabots programs in schools -
Food rescue -Pataka Kai - Curtainbank - Healthy Homes Taitokerau Insulation program & Housing Repairs
What do you think gets in the way of people contacting you for support (what are their fears and concerns)?
1. I guess most whanau don't know all the things we do - We aren't publicising it well in our own community
Kaore te Kumara e korero mo tona ake reka - the kumara does not tell us how sweet it is
We focus on doing the mahi and not talking about it a lot - however, we are utilising social media better now through our Facebook page
2. For the whanau - sometimes whakama is the reason whanau don't contact us
3. Accessibility is a major issue that we are addressing continually as the office is manned 9-3 30 hours per week
What surprises people when they do start working with you?
I believe our point of difference is our kaupapa and our values which are based on the Dynamics of Whanaungatanga
They articulate Mana & Tapu - Tika Pono & Aroha
We try in everything we do to ensure we are practising in a mana-enhancing way, respecting the tapu of the individuals
That all our whanau are Tapu and deserve to be treated with respect & dignity - we are challenging each other to speak our truth with love!
What results have you seen in your work with whānau?
