Whaiora - Issue 8

How does your service support whānau?
Pōuri Manaaki is a peer support group for people and families affected by suicide or sudden death. Being a peer support group allows whānau to be supported by others walking the same path. Attendees are free to share as much or as little as they wish. Everyone is welcomed with unconditional love and understanding.
Our group was started by myself (a local counsellor) and a father who had lost his son to suicide. He found himself alone in his grief and knew there were others in his position. Together, we founded Pōuri Manaaki to provide whānau a safe space to express their feelings and emotions while listening to others share their experiences.

We meet every Wednesday evening at 6:30 at Hope Church, 1 Hunt Street, Whangārei (we are not affiliated with the church). Attendance is free with koha greatly appreciated.

What do you think gets in the way of people contacting you for support (what are their fears and concerns)?
The fear of the unknown is a barrier to attendance. People who would attend our group are already in a painful and uncertain place which can make it more difficult to be in a vulnerable situation such as attending a support group.

What surprises people when they do start working with you?

How loving and welcoming we are, how freeing it is to have a safe space to talk about hard topics and feelings. How life changing it is to be fully accepted and cared for, unconditionally.

What results have you seen in your work with whānau?
We have seen the light come back into people eyes, we have seen people going through the worst times of their lives being able to smile again, we have seen the relief when attendees hear others expressing their feelings and realizing they’re not alone. We have seen ups and downs and everything in between.

Would someone you have worked with in the past share their experience of how your service has helped them?
"This group provides a safe and nurturing space where we can share our whakawhiti kōrero and support one another.
I've learned that I'm not alone in my journey, and that has made all the difference in my healing.
The power of sharing, listening, and caring – this group has been a lifeline for my mental well-being
I'm grateful for the manaakitanga and awhi I've found within this group as we navigate our way through grief."

Is there a referral process or can people self-refer to your service?
There is no referral process. Anyone can attend meetings by just showing up at the venue on Wednesday evenings.
